. Nils van der Poel broke his own world record Friday night en route to winning the mens 10000-meter speedskating race and picking up his second gold medal of the Beijing Olympics. The bronze went to Italys Davide Ghiotto while defending Olympic champion Jorrit Bergsma was fourth. Nils van der Poel extended his reign over mens distance speedskating Friday obliterating the 10000-meter world record to earn his second gold medal of these Winter Games.
His reign did not last though as Swedens Nils van der Poel surpassed Roest in the final pairing of the event to win his first gold medal. Patrick Roest of the Netherlands set an Olympic record in the fifth pairing of the mens 5000m speed skating event on Sunday. Van der Poel who takes his surname from a Dutch.
